I followed the recipe on the back of the packet
- Boil 100gm of Tur dal with some turmeric, ghee and tomatoes for added flavor. Mash the dal into a smooth paste
- Add 2 tsp of the Hot Hot Rasam powder and tamarind paste/powder/water and salt according to taste and adjust the consistency.
- Boil the above mixture for about 15 minutes and then add the seasonings/tadka.
Tadka/Seasonings:
Take 1 tbsp of oil in a pan and heat it through. To this add mustard seeds, curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida (hing).
Verdict:
Turns out that the taste is not that of rasam but more like a cross between rasam and sambar. It tasted yummy nevertheless.
UPDATE: I have been using this powder for over 8 years now and have grown to love the taste of rasam made with it. I still make it using the recipe above and it is my go to dish when I want something quick and filling. Depending on the consistency you like your rasam to be, you could add more or less water.
