Iyengar's Hot Hot Rasam Powder Review


Do you know that sudden urge when you are browsing through the isles of a supermarket and then you spot a new item on the shelves that is screaming 'Try Me!' at you? Well thats what happened to me the other day at the Indian grocery store, when I saw Iyengar's Hot Hot rasam powder. I had to give it a try, as I was craving some good rasam.




I followed the recipe on the back of the packet
  1. Boil  100gm of  Tur dal with some turmeric, ghee and tomatoes for added flavor. Mash the dal into a smooth paste

  2. Add 2 tsp of the Hot Hot Rasam powder and tamarind paste/powder/water  and salt according to taste and  adjust the consistency.

  3. Boil the above mixture for about 15 minutes and then add the seasonings/tadka.

Tadka/Seasonings:

Take 1 tbsp of oil in a pan and heat it through. To this add mustard seeds, curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida (hing).



Verdict:
Turns out that the taste is not that of rasam but more like a cross between rasam and sambar. It tasted yummy nevertheless.

UPDATE: I have been using this powder for over 8 years now and have grown to love the taste of rasam made with it. I still make it using the recipe above and it is my go to dish when I want something quick and filling. Depending on the consistency you like your rasam to be, you could add more or less water.
